Reddit Shares Fall 29% as Search Referrals Drop and Management Warns on User Base

A projected low-double-digit contraction in fourth-quarter daily users overshadowed third-quarter revenue and earnings beats.

Reddit shares dropped 29.2% on Oct. 30, 2026, marking the stock's sharpest post-earnings selloff since its market debut. The steep decline came during the first trading session following the release of the company's fiscal third-quarter report, as reported by Yahoo Finance (https://www.trefis.com/stock/rddt/articles/622319/what-did-reddits-quarter-change-for-its-stock/2026-11-03?.tsrc=rss). The rout occurred despite headline numbers that beat consensus estimates, after executive commentary pointed to compounding headwinds in search traffic and near-term user acquisition.

For the third quarter of fiscal 2026, Reddit generated $895 million in revenue, up 53% year over year and roughly 2% above consensus projections. Diluted earnings per share reached $1.40, clearing analyst forecasts of $1.33. Operating margins also broadened to 29.2%, up from 23.7% in the prior-year period. While the top line advanced, the pace marked continued moderation from the 69.1% growth recorded in the first quarter and 61.1% in the second quarter.

Investor focus shifted entirely to the Oct. 29 conference call, where leadership warned that daily active unique users could decline by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from the current baseline of 130 million. The disclosure unmasked an accelerating slowdown in unpaid inbound web traffic: referrals sent to Reddit from external search engines deteriorated throughout the third quarter and fell by more than 1 million visits per week on average in October.

The disruption reflects broader structural alterations across major search engines, notably Google's expansion of AI Overviews and query-answering AI modes that surface syntheses directly on results pages rather than sending users to external community threads. That shift has already affected Reddit's domestic audience, with U.S. daily active unique users sliding 2% year over year in the third quarter—the platform's first domestic user drop since its initial public offering in March 2024.

Fourth-quarter financial guidance further cooled market sentiment. Reddit projected fourth-quarter revenue between $1.00 billion and $1.03 billion, translating to annual growth of 38% to 42%, below Wall Street targets that had clustered between $1.04 billion and $1.05 billion. Management's adjusted EBITDA forecast of $480 million to $510 million also lagged the consensus benchmark of $509.4 million.

Defending the model, executives noted that roughly 80% of platform monetization occurs through mobile app engagement and logged-in visitors, cohorts insulated from organic search volatility. To fortify those economics, Reddit plans to pilot a logged-in-only platform format across select international markets in the fourth quarter, intentionally sacrificing passive top-of-funnel reach to drive user account creation.

The user warning triggered rapid price target reductions across major brokerages, including Deutsche Bank, Jefferies, and DA Davidson. The durability of Reddit's registered user defense will face its first measurable benchmark when the company reports audited fourth-quarter and fiscal 2026 results in February 2027.
