Apple Prepares 'iPhone Handoff' Feature to Share One Phone Number Across Two Devices

Apple is preparing to release a new mobile software feature called iPhone Handoff alongside the official deployment of iOS 27 later this month, according to details first reported by The Verge. The upcoming capability will allow users to connect two separate iPhones so that both devices operate using a single phone number.

The feature was briefly noted during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote presentation in June, though the company did not offer specifics at the time. Demonstration footage illustrating the feature's setup workflow recently surfaced within the Device Hub interface inside Xcode 27.

According to the setup clip, configuring iPhone Handoff requires pairing two iPhones together. Users designate one device as their primary smartphone, while the secondary unit is assigned as a companion handset.

The arrival of the multi-device functionality coincides with the anticipated release of Apple's foldable iPhone Ultra. Observers note that the capability provides practical flexibility for owners of larger or more expensive handsets who may prefer not to bring high-value hardware into certain environments.

With iPhone Handoff, consumers can temporarily transfer their line to a smaller or lower-cost device. The configuration allows users to leave their primary phone behind and rely on a secondary handset, such as an older or damaged iPhone 13.

Enabling the feature will require explicit support from mobile network providers. Software references discovered in the codebase indicate initial carrier compatibility with T-Mobile US and Telekom.de, though support across additional telecom providers remains unconfirmed.
