Apple Omits Base Model From iPhone Launch Event, Shifting Focus to Foldable Duo and Pro Series
Chief Executive John Ternus introduced high-end Pro devices and the new foldable iPhone Duo, holding back the standard flagship refresh.

At its recent "Surprise and Shine" product presentation, Apple unveiled a restructured smartphone strategy led by newly appointed Chief Executive Officer John Ternus. The event featured the company's long-anticipated entry into the foldable hardware segment with the debut of the iPhone Duo, alongside updated upper-tier devices. However, the corporate showcase concluded without the introduction of a standard base-model iPhone 18.
Before revealing the foldable handset, Ternus and the Apple executive team detailed the performance features of the flagship iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The decision to conclude the product rollouts without a base model represented a distinct pivot toward the high end of the consumer technology market.
The initial product lineup relies heavily on premium price points across the new device suite. The iPhone 18 Pro opens at a base price of $1,199, while the foldable iPhone Duo occupies the top end of the portfolio with a starting price of $1,999.
The selective reveal marks a structural departure from Apple's traditional September product cadence. Historically, the Cupertino company discloses its complete smartphone generation across all consumer price tiers in a single comprehensive rollout.
Industry observers pointed out that Apple likely sought to prevent product overlap and maintain full marketing emphasis on the debut of its inaugural foldable device, as reported by Mashable Tech. Holding back standard tiers allows the company to anchor consumer attention on the high-margin iPhone Duo.
Heading into the corporate presentation, market expectations had already indicated that Apple might defer the release of its standard flagship tier. According to ongoing industry reports, the base iPhone 18, an entry-level 18e variant, and an all-new iPhone Air model are slated to launch in March 2027.
The revised timeline means budget-conscious consumers seeking a mid-tier upgrade inside Apple's current platform face a prospective six-month wait for the next iteration of standard devices.
To cover immediate market demand, Apple is staggering the commercial availability of its new lineup. Preorders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max begin on Sept. 12, while preorders for the foldable iPhone Duo start on Oct. 16, with legacy iPhone 17 and 17e models remaining available for purchase.
