German automobile manufacturer Audi has unveiled the A2 e-tron, positioning the vehicle as the most energy-efficient production electric model in the company's historical lineup. Designed to target the compact entry-level market segment, the new model marks a pivot from Audi's higher-performance, premium electric offerings such as the RS e-tron GT Performance, prioritizing energy conservation and range extension over raw power output.

According to official specifications released by Audi and first reported by Engadget, the A2 e-tron achieves an energy consumption rate of 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers. On a full charge, the electric hatchback yields an estimated driving range of approximately 646 kilometers (roughly 400 miles). This distance was calculated under the European Union's Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), which generally produces higher range estimates than the testing methodology employed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The vehicle's efficiency gains stem heavily from aerodynamic engineering optimizations that allow it to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.24. Audi accomplished this streamlined profile through smoothed body surfaces, narrowed gaps within the wheel assemblies, and electronic door handles that sit flush against the exterior paneling to minimize wind resistance.

Underneath the chassis, buyers will have access to three distinct battery size configurations: a base 52 kWh pack, a mid-tier 61 kWh variant, and a top-spec 84 kWh capacity model. Fast-charging hardware allows the largest 84 kWh battery to recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent capacity in up to 29 minutes, while the smaller battery variants can complete the same charging window in 24 to 25 minutes.

Audi has also integrated bidirectional power transfer functionality into the vehicle architecture. The system enables the onboard battery to export electricity to external devices, allowing owners to power hardware such as laptops and electric bicycles, or function as a backup residential energy system during power grid interruptions.

Inside the cabin, the A2 e-tron features a modernized digital environment anchored by two main screen interfaces. The driver receives key operational data via an 11.9-inch digital cockpit display, complemented by a centrally positioned 12.8-inch touchscreen interface dedicated to vehicle controls and infotainment functions.

North American consumers are unlikely to see the vehicle on domestic roads, as Audi confirmed the model was built specifically to address the requirements of the European market. Preorders for the entry-level EV will open on September 10, with initial consumer deliveries slated to begin in December. The A2 e-tron carries a base starting price of 38,200 euros, or approximately $44,300.
