Ferrari has reportedly reached its 2026 sales target for the Luce, its first fully electric vehicle, only two months after the model was revealed. The company planned to sell just under 500 units at approximately 555,000 euros, or about $630,000.

The result runs against the negative reaction that followed the May unveiling. Online critics compared the wedge-shaped five-seat car with less expensive electric models and questioned whether its styling justified the price. Ferrari shares fell 8% the day after the presentation.

Demand appears to be strongest among the company's existing customer base, which is accustomed to owning multiple Ferraris and paying for limited production. Previous reporting indicated that at least one-fifth of the year's allocation may go to China, where buyers have shown strong interest in fast, premium four-door electric vehicles.

Jony Ive's LoveFrom worked on the design, which combines familiar Ferrari elements with a shape intended for an electric platform and more practical seating. Early driving reports suggest the company has preserved the performance expected from the brand, although Ferrari has not publicly confirmed the sales figure cited by the Financial Times.

The sales target was intentionally limited, which protects exclusivity and reduces the risk of excess inventory. Ferrari can learn from a small fleet before expanding electric production. The harder question is whether technology developed for the Luce can support future models at higher volume without weakening the scarcity that helps justify its price.

The Luce's early sales do not yet show whether Ferrari can build a repeatable electric business. A small allocation can sell to collectors even when broader demand is uncertain, and the true test will come when the company offers additional models or increases production. Ferrari must protect driving character, service quality and resale value while explaining battery longevity to buyers accustomed to mechanical engines. The launch can still influence the luxury market by proving that an electric vehicle can command an extreme price without imitating the design and software language of mass-market EV brands.

The Luce does not prove mass-market demand for expensive EVs. It demonstrates that a scarce luxury product can succeed even when public reaction is hostile. Ferrari needed fewer than 500 committed buyers, not broad approval. For low-volume manufacturers, brand loyalty and controlled supply can matter more than the consensus formed on launch day.
