Google Meet Expands Gemini AI Note-Taking to In-Person Meetings
The updated feature generates automated summaries and transcripts for offline sessions, delivering Google Docs directly to Google Drive.

Google has broadened the capabilities of its Google Meet communication platform by introducing AI-powered automated note-taking for offline, in-person gatherings. The expansion allows the software to capture and summarize physical meetings in real time, extending a feature previously limited to online video calls, as first reported by ZDNET.
The feature rollout began on August 11 for mobile application users and followed on August 14 for desktop interfaces. Rather than offering basic transcriptions, the functionality leverages Google's Gemini artificial intelligence to convert captured audio into organized summaries paired with comprehensive meeting transcripts. The software automatically compiles these materials into a Google Doc, stores the document within Google Drive, and distributes an access link directly to the user's email inbox without requiring supplementary software or hardware installations.
Google has outlined specific operational protocols for users leveraging the in-person note-taking tool. Hosts are required to explicitly notify all present participants that Gemini is actively listening and documenting the discussion. This notice requirement aims to maintain transparency during physical workplace or organizational sessions where recording tools are deployed.
The system supports eight individual languages at launch, comprising English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. However, the software can only process one selected language per session and cannot process multi-language conversations simultaneously. Additionally, Google indicates that the note-taking capability is optimized for meeting durations ranging from a minimum of 15 minutes to a maximum of 8 hours.
To launch the tool within the Google Meet interface, users locate and select a dedicated "Take notes" control positioned adjacent to the standard "New" button. Selecting this option initiates Gemini's audio processing and note creation. Once the physical session concludes, clicking the same button terminates the active recording and triggers document processing.
Access to the new capability depends on account tier structures. Business accounts on standard and plus organizational tiers receive access to the in-person note-taking feature as part of their existing packages. For individual account holders, utilizing the feature requires an active subscription to either Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra service plans.
