Google Wallet Introduces Parent-Controlled Spending for Children
Google Wallet has launched a new feature allowing parents in the United States to establish and manage digital spending accounts for their children and teenagers.

Google has rolled out an update to Google Wallet, introducing a new functionality designed to empower parents in the U.S. to create and oversee digital spending accounts for their children and adolescents. This tool allows parents to contribute funds to these accounts as needed.
The new feature, which Google has not given a specific marketing name, aims to assist parents in cultivating responsible financial habits among their children, according to a press release from the company. It provides mechanisms for parents to observe their children's purchasing activities and implement virtual spending limits to prevent excessive expenditures.
Parents can gain insights into their child’s account transactions through a detailed list of activities. Additionally, if enabled, push notifications can be received from Family Link, offering real-time updates on spending.
The system also includes remote management capabilities. Parents can initiate a 'spending timeout' or secure an account if a device is misplaced, providing flexibility and control over their child's digital finances from a distance.
A key advantage of this Google Wallet integration is that children do not require a personal bank account to utilize the service. Payments can be made using an Android smartphone or a Wear OS wearable device.
Transactions from these parent-supervised balances are accepted anywhere Google Pay is a valid payment option. This broad compatibility ensures that children can make purchases at a wide range of vendors.
This introduction positions Google in a competitive landscape, as Apple already offers a comparable service through Apple Cash Family. Google's entry into this segment provides a similar solution for families primarily using Android devices, addressing concerns about managing children’s spending, particularly during periods like school breaks.
