Google announced on Thursday that its Google Wallet platform has been updated to include a new capability for parents: the creation of secure financial balances for their children under the age of 18.

The technology corporation stated that this new functionality aims to assist parents in instilling responsible financial habits in their children, while simultaneously providing tools for monitoring expenditures through integrated protective measures. Parents can define daily spending limits, review a child's transaction history, and opt to receive alerts for each purchase made.

Further parental controls include the ability to lock or unlock an account if a child's device is lost, or to initiate a temporary 'spending timeout' to temporarily suspend purchasing power. This feature positions Google Wallet competitively against other financial tools, such as Apple Cash Family, which offers similar mechanisms for parents to transfer funds to children and supervise their transactions and spending.

Additionally, Google is competing with emerging companies like FamZoo and Greenlight, which provide prepaid debit card systems designed to educate children about financial literacy. Minors can utilize their Android or Wear OS devices to conduct tap-to-pay transactions wherever Google Pay is accepted.

Google views this new offering as a method for children to manage their own funds without needing a traditional bank account. The update is currently being deployed within the United States.

The company has not yet disclosed plans for when, or if, this new feature will be introduced in other international regions.

This latest development expands upon a prior announcement from Google last year, which permitted parents and guardians in specific countries to authorize their children to use digital payments on Android devices under parental oversight. At that time, adding a payment card required parental consent, and parents would receive an email notification for every transaction initiated by their child.

The 2025 update also granted children the ability to use Google Wallet for accessing various supported passes, including event tickets, library cards, and gift cards.
