An open-source catalog tracking data visualization software has launched daily metric ranking across major software package registries, according to details shared on Hacker News. Maintained by developer Javier Luraschi alongside community contributors, the project compiles, ranks, and categorizes 291 visualization tools, spanning charting libraries, mapping toolkits, graph visualizers, and dashboard platforms.

The directory, hosted at awesomedataviz.com, updates its rankings daily with live metric updates gathered from four software distribution ecosystems: GitHub, npm, PyPI, and CRAN. By aggregating metrics from these cross-language hubs, the site provides a structured overview of tool adoption across JavaScript, Python, React, and R environments.

To display the catalog, the website renders individual software packages as single dots positioned along a logarithmic scale reflecting total GitHub stars, organized into category rows such as JavaScript charting, Python tools, React components, JavaScript mapping utilities, R packages, and network visualizers. In each row, the project with the highest star count is labeled, and users can hover over dots for details or click through to open project links.

The indexed tools cover both developer libraries and end-user applications. Tracked software includes web tools for creating codeless Sankey diagrams, JavaScript libraries producing dynamic visualizations with SVG, Canvas, and HTML, and observability platforms handling operational metrics, logs, and traces. The directory also categorizes data exploration platforms with SQL IDEs, business intelligence tools with embedded analytics, Python frameworks for building data applications, code-based Python architecture diagramming tools, and node-based flow editor libraries including React Flow and Svelte Flow.

The directory is also structured for programmatic access by artificial intelligence models. In addition to a web interface, the platform exposes its data via a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, a JSON API, and an llms.txt endpoint, enabling AI assistants to recommend visualization software based on current repository metrics rather than training memory.

The project builds on a community-curated GitHub list maintained since 2014, with all directory content published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license. The catalog's infrastructure is hosted on cloudish.ai and sponsored by Hal9.
