A new open-source utility called RemoveMacAI gives Mac users a way to turn off Apple Intelligence and reclaim gigabytes of storage space following system changes in macOS 27 Golden Gate. Unlike earlier operating system releases, macOS 27 lacks a unified master toggle to disable Apple's AI suite, leaving users to turn off individual features manually while underlying model files remain stored on disk.

The utility was developed by a programmer known on GitHub as Om Lahore, as reported by Ars Technica (https://arstechnica.com/apple/2026/10/command-line-tool-quickly-removes-apple-intelligence-from-macos-27/). According to the project repository, the script disables Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT integration, and summary features, then deletes the associated machine learning models and prevents macOS from downloading them again. Dictation functionality remains unaffected because it operates under a distinct configuration setting.

Storage savings depend on system configuration. Lahore noted on GitHub that the local Apple Intelligence assets occupy roughly 12GB of drive space, while reporting from The Verge cited in the coverage indicates that the models can consume upwards of 30GB.

RemoveMacAI achieves removal without disabling macOS System Integrity Protection (SIP) or altering files inside the protected /System directory. Instead, the tool uses an approved configuration profile in System Settings in combination with Apple's native asset service. The modification is fully reversible: running a revert command removes the profile, allowing macOS to download models again when features are re-enabled. Users can also selectively disable specific tools while retaining others.

As of publication, the GitHub repository has accumulated 1,700 stars alongside positive user reports on Reddit, where discussion of the utility was first noted by MacRumors. The reception highlights persistent demand among some users to opt out of bundled AI capabilities and manage local hardware resources.
