Google finds itself at a pivotal juncture in the artificial intelligence sector, marked by a contrast between robust growth in its cloud services and the departure of prominent AI personnel. Recent weeks have highlighted this dynamic, with the company reporting an 82% surge in cloud division revenue. Simultaneously, Google’s AI organization experienced a significant shift with the announcement that chief scientist Jeff Dean would be leaving after 27 years, following other notable exits.

The 2017 transformer paper, a foundational document for the generative AI boom, originated from Google, underscoring the company's historical leadership in the field. However, the current challenge for the $4 trillion corporation lies in strategic investment. Developing cutting-edge AI models requires substantial upfront capital for computational resources and research, with no immediate guarantee of returns. In contrast, the cloud business demonstrates high efficiency and is expanding more rapidly than competing offerings from Amazon and Microsoft.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently stated that 90% of Fortune 100 companies utilize Gemini Enterprise, illustrating Google’s effectiveness in selling AI services to its cloud clientele. Tomasz Tunguz, founder of Theory Ventures, observes that for many enterprise needs, particularly in white-collar professions, advanced models are not always a prerequisite. He suggests that the next generation of models will likely prove most beneficial in specialized domains requiring sophisticated computing capabilities.

Google's comprehensive approach to AI has contributed to its stock performance, which has risen 16% this year after a 65% increase in 2025, surpassing its major peers. Despite this, recent events have introduced volatility. Alphabet shares declined following its latest earnings report due to concerns about capital expenditures, and fell further after Dean’s departure and Demis Hassabis's transition from CEO of Google DeepMind to chairman of the unit.

Internally, not all sentiment is positive. Some researchers express frustration over limited access to the necessary computing capacity for ambitious projects, even as Google Cloud sells its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to external clients, including competitors like Anthropic. TPUs are Google's proprietary AI chips designed to rival Nvidia's Graphics Processing Units. Google’s internal bureaucracy, requiring multiple layers of approval to integrate research into products, further exacerbates these frustrations, making emerging companies like OpenAI or Anthropic more attractive to AI researchers who prioritize laboratory work over corporate processes.

Jeff Dean is departing alongside Google colleagues Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le to launch Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on automating machine learning, science, and engineering to accelerate discoveries, with Google's backing. These exits follow other significant departures, including Noam Shazeer, a co-author of the seminal 2017 "Attention Is All You Need" paper, who left for OpenAI. All eight authors of that paper have now moved on from Google. Shazeer’s departure, less than two years after Google spent nearly $3 billion to re-acquire him, preceded Nobel laureate John Jumper's move from DeepMind to Anthropic.

Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, identifies a clear pattern in this exodus of top talent. He suggests that these individuals are driven by a desire to make historical contributions rather than solely commercializing AI, viewing companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, or other startups as environments where they can pursue these ambitions. Dean, notably, had been a vocal critic of the Trump administration and recently opposed the Pentagon's decision to classify Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, arguing it could harm the broader U.S. AI industry. From a technical standpoint, he was instrumental in establishing Google's early leadership in modern AI by developing its computing infrastructure and neural network systems.

Demis Hassabis, co-founder of DeepMind, which Google acquired in 2014, is transitioning to chairman of the division and assuming a newly created role as chief scientist at Alphabet. In this capacity, he will focus on long-term research and the societal implications of artificial general intelligence (AGI), while also dedicating more time to Isomorphic Labs, an AI drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's technology chief and Alphabet's chief AI architect, will now manage the division’s daily operations and the development of the next Gemini model. Kavukcuoglu has progressively taken on more responsibilities from Hassabis over the past year, including leading model development and major Gemini presentations, as Hassabis shifted focus towards regulatory aspects and the broader implications of advanced AI.

A significant internal point of contention at Google revolves around computational resources. Despite Google's substantial investments in data centers, chips, and related infrastructure, capacity remains limited. The allocation of TPUs for model training, supporting Google products, or fulfilling cloud contracts necessitates difficult choices among competing priorities. Frustrations are particularly acute when Google commits significant infrastructure to rival labs like Anthropic, whose models directly compete with Gemini. Google maintains long-term projections for compute demand across research, product serving, and cloud customer needs, though priorities and allocations can shift in response to product growth or evolving strategic imperatives. Pichai has consistently emphasized Google’s commitment to prioritizing DeepMind’s compute needs, even as demand from cloud customers escalates, affirming that securing compute for AGI development is foundational to Google’s broader initiatives.
