The International Meteor Organization has taken key components of its digital operations offline following a cyberattack that inflicted what representatives termed a "critical blow" to its legacy IT architecture.

In a notice posted to its website on Wednesday, the organization stated that it anticipates several weeks of partial operational downtime while technical teams migrate systems to replacement services and upgraded infrastructure. During the outage, the nonprofit is prioritizing the collection of incoming fireball observations through a secondary reporting portal while sharing administrative updates on its Facebook page.

Formally established in 1988, the International Meteor Organization plays a central role in global astronomy by standardizing how observation data is gathered and cataloged. The entity maintains public repositories containing text, photograph, and video records of meteor events submitted by both professional researchers and amateur observers, while also publishing the bimonthly journal Working Group News, commonly referred to as WGN.

The service disruption has drawn concern across the scientific community due to the network's role as a primary research archive. In comments first reported by Ars Technica, Campion College associate professor of astronomy Sam Lawler expressed sadness over the outage, describing the site as exceptionally useful despite having no personal affiliation with the organization.

The motivation behind targeting the international scientific body remains unidentified. Because the organization primarily maintains public-domain observational data, industry observers note that the target offers little obvious incentive for data theft. Furthermore, no cybercrime groups have publicly claimed responsibility for the intrusion, nor have any ransom demands been reported.

While security incidents involving organizations dedicated to space research, astronomical observation, and space travel occur less frequently than those impacting corporate enterprise environments, the sector has seen heightened exposure in recent years.

In 2023, federal agencies in the United States issued formal warnings highlighting that both commercial and public space-sector entities faced potential threats from state-sponsored hacking groups. That same year, Russian officials publicly stated that commercial satellite systems could be viewed as valid military targets, alongside reported efforts by Russian intelligence to monitor communications satellites operated by NATO.

The incident also follows a 2023 ransomware attack against the American Meteorological Society, highlighting ongoing technical vulnerabilities across scientific nonprofit infrastructure. The International Meteor Organization continues to work through its multi-week migration process as members of the astronomical community rely on temporary submission pathways.
