The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reviewing a defect petition requesting an investigation into Tesla's autonomous vehicles for allegedly exceeding posted speed limits in active school zones, according to reporting by The Verge (https://www.theverge.com/transportation/1010364/tesla-robotaxi-school-zonespeeding-investigation).

The petition, received by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation on September 23, 2026, targets model year 2026 Tesla Robotaxis—specifically Model Y and Cybercab vehicles—with their Automated Driving System (ADS) engaged. The agency noted that the review evaluates allegations concerning roughly 1,000 Tesla robotaxis using the system.

The inquiry adds to existing federal scrutiny surrounding Tesla's autonomous driving systems. The Cybercab, which launched earlier in 2026, is already under investigation for lacking physical controls and safety hardware, including a steering wheel, pedals, and side mirrors. NHTSA has also opened a separate investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving system following traffic violations such as running red lights and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Federal regulators have scrutinized other autonomous fleet operators over school-adjacent safety concerns. Waymo robotaxis have faced similar inquiries after incidents that included illegally passing school buses and striking a child near an elementary school in California.
