Schwartz Confirmed as CDC Director Despite Contentious Hearing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a new director, Dr. Schwartz, filling a position that remained vacant for nearly a year. The previous director, Susan Monarez, was dismissed last August by President Kennedy after she declined to endorse vaccine recommendations from his hand-picked advisors, who reportedly share the president's anti-vaccine stance.

Dr. Schwartz brings extensive qualifications to the role, including a medical degree, a master's degree in public health, and a law degree. Her professional background encompasses a distinguished career as a Navy officer, with leadership roles such as chief medical officer for the U.S. Coast Guard and deputy surgeon general during the first Trump administration.

Known for her public advocacy of vaccines and preparedness for disease outbreaks, Dr. Schwartz's selection initially surprised many external health experts, who expressed cautious optimism about her appointment.

While President Kennedy's anti-vaccine ally, Aaron Siri, criticized her nomination due to her pro-vaccine views, the broader health community had hoped Dr. Schwartz could stabilize and revitalize the CDC. The agency has been facing declining morale, staff reductions, budget cuts, and criticism from President Kennedy and his political appointees.

However, these expectations were tempered during Dr. Schwartz's confirmation hearing last month. Senators noted her reluctance to provide direct answers and to firmly commit to opposing President Kennedy's anti-vaccine and anti-science policies.

A particularly concerning aspect of her testimony arose when senators inquired about how she would respond if confronted with a situation similar to that of her predecessor, Monarez. Dr. Schwartz dismissed the scenario, stating, “I do not believe that the president or the secretary would ever do what you just mentioned,” a response that prompted Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to express skepticism.

Following the hearing, senators voiced their disappointment, and many health experts withdrew their endorsements. The National Public Health Coalition (NPHC), a nonprofit established by former federal health workers, subsequently released a statement on July 15, 2026, opposing her confirmation. The organization emphasized the need for a CDC Director who would uphold the law, defend scientific principles, safeguard public health professionals, and reconstruct essential systems.

Dr. Schwartz's confirmation ultimately depended on support from figures such as Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.), a self-proclaimed vaccine advocate who also cast a decisive vote for President Kennedy's health secretary. Although Senator Cassidy initially described Dr. Schwartz's hearing performance as “disappointing,” he later indicated that subsequent discussions with her and her former colleagues had reassured him. According to Stat News, he expressed confidence in her capabilities.
