SoftBank's $50 Million Donation to Trump Library Preceded Federal Data Center Deal
SoftBank contributed $50 million to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Fund in January, several months before securing a federal land lease for a major data center project in Ohio.

SoftBank, a Japanese technology conglomerate, made a $50 million donation to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library in January. This contribution occurred just months prior to the company's announcement of a lease agreement with the federal government for constructing a large-scale data center in Ohio.
The timeline of events came to light through SoftBank's response to a June inquiry from Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), alongside Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-NM). The lawmakers' letter expressed concerns regarding potential bribery connected to the donation and subsequent deal.
Senator Warren commented on the situation, questioning the coincidence of the $50 million donation preceding the substantial lease agreement by two months. She suggested a pattern of former President Trump prioritizing personal agreements with executives over the interests of American citizens.
In March, SoftBank's subsidiary, SB Energy, disclosed a public-private partnership aimed at developing what it described as the world's largest AI data center. This facility is slated for construction at the U.S. Department of Energy's site in Portsmouth, Ohio. The partnership also includes plans for SB Energy to build a nearby gas-fired power plant with a generating capacity of at least 9.2 gigawatts.
Lawmakers highlighted that SoftBank had previously contributed to the presidential libraries of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. However, those donations were made after the respective presidents had left office and after the library foundations had been formally established. In contrast, the donation to the Trump Presidential Library occurred during Trump's term in office and before any physical library structure was built.
Furthermore, the entity initially responsible for collecting donations, the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Fund, had been dissolved by the state of Florida the previous September due to its failure to submit an annual report. SoftBank clarified in its response that its $50 million contribution was made to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation, Inc. Eric Trump, son of former President Trump, serves as a trustee for this nonprofit organization, according to Citizens for Ethics.
SoftBank stated in its letter that, consistent with its prior support for presidential libraries, this donation is intended to fund the construction and operational aspects of the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library.
