Tesla has effectively discontinued its solar roof business, removing product references and dedicated support pages from its website. Web addresses that previously pointed to solar roof offerings now redirect visitors to the electric vehicle maker’s general solar energy landing page. The removal of the product line from Tesla’s customer-facing channels was first reported by Electrek and subsequently verified by TechCrunch.

Despite the digital phase-out, existing inventory may remain available for a limited period through third-party installers. Two solar installation firms told TechCrunch that they are continuing to offer the solar roof to prospective clients, though availability depends on specific project schedules. The continued field availability suggests Tesla is attempting to clear remaining warehouse stock rather than sustaining active production.

The shutdown concludes a multi-year effort that began nearly a decade ago when Tesla announced plans to replace conventional roofing with power-generating tiles designed to resemble high-end shingles, terracotta, or slate. Although the enterprise set an ambitious production benchmark of 1,000 installations per week, the initiative struggled to achieve commercial scale. Following years of process adjustments and manufacturing refinements, Tesla was completing only between 20 and 40 installations per week as of 2022.

Commercial adoption was severely limited by high consumer costs. Tesla marketed the product as a dual-purpose investment combining structural roof replacement with clean energy generation, attempting to appeal to aesthetic-minded buyers who disliked standard solar panels. However, installation costs frequently reached prohibitive levels, with some prospective customers receiving quotes up to $200,000.

Economic dynamics within the broader solar industry also worked against Tesla’s specialized approach. While standard silicon solar panels became progressively cheaper due to mass global production of uniform cells and modules, Tesla’s unique tile architecture required dedicated manufacturing machinery. Because installation numbers remained low, Tesla could not spread the capital expense of its custom manufacturing equipment across high unit volumes, driving up production costs per unit.

The system was also burdened by engineering and physical constraints associated with thermal management. Solar cell voltage declines by approximately 0.5 percent for every degree Celsius rise in temperature. While conventional solar panels are mounted with an air space between the panels and the roof surface to enable cooling airflow, Tesla’s integrated tiles offered a considerably smaller gap. The resulting heat retention lowered the operating efficiency of the cells, leading to widespread reports of electrical underproduction.

Severe heat exposure created additional structural reliability concerns for the installed systems. Reports indicated that non-solar components of the tiles warped under high heat conditions, while protective underlayment materials beneath the tiles suffered from melting. These operational and physical issues ultimately prompted Tesla to redirect prospective residential solar customers toward traditional roof-mounted panels.

Tesla’s retreat from the market presents a major setback for building-integrated photovoltaics, though rival companies continue to operate in the sector. Firms such as GAF and Merlin Solar remain focused on building-integrated solar solutions for homeowners seeking alternatives to standard panel arrays. Nevertheless, Tesla's departure illustrates the steep technical and financial barriers facing companies trying to commercialize non-standardized solar roofing technologies.
