Waymo has resumed autonomous ride-hailing operations in San Antonio, Texas, five months after flash flooding forced the company to pull its vehicles off local streets. The return marks a key step in the Alphabet subsidiary's efforts to rebuild operational capabilities following weather-related safety incidents earlier this year.

The company's service interruption began in April when multiple self-driving vehicles encountered severe weather conditions in the region. During the heavy rainstorms, several robotaxis failed to recognize hazardous standing water and continued navigating into flooded roadways, resulting in at least one vehicle being swept away by floodwaters.

In response to the incidents, Waymo issued a voluntary software recall in May and implemented temporary geographical restrictions prohibiting its fleet from entering regions designated as high-risk for flooding. Operational pauses were also briefly enacted across other Texas markets around the same time, though service in those cities has since been restored.

The restarted San Antonio service involves dozens of fully autonomous vehicles operating across a 60-square-mile territory, as first reported by the San Antonio Express-News and detailed in coverage by TechCrunch. The deployment footprint spans key transit hubs and commercial centers, including downtown San Antonio and San Antonio International Airport.

To address the root cause of the April failures, Waymo told local media that its engineering team updated the vehicle software stack. The software adjustments are designed to enhance sensor perception and algorithmic decision-making, allowing the autonomous driving system to identify standing water earlier and alter routes around potential flood hazards.

The revival of San Antonio operations comes as Waymo continues to scale its commercial driverless network across the United States. The company currently provides paid autonomous rides in 15 U.S. cities, navigating complex urban environments while updating safety protocols to adapt to regional hazards.

Navigating extreme weather remains one of the primary technical challenges for commercial autonomous vehicle operators. While self-driving fleets have made significant progress in clear-weather mapping and standard suburban navigation, heavy precipitation and localized flooding require specialized perception models to ensure operational safety.

Waymo's ability to navigate San Antonio's weather vulnerabilities will serve as an ongoing test for its updated software capabilities. As the company expands paid services into more regional markets, managing environmental anomalies remains central to its deployment strategy.
