The traditional playbook for enterprise digital defense is breaking under the demands of artificial intelligence, driving significant capital into startups building automated, real-time security systems. With autonomous agents and AI systems expanding enterprise attack surfaces, public cybersecurity stocks are climbing and venture firms are deploying capital into specialized platforms at valuations that would have been unviable only a few years ago.

Speaking on TechCrunch's Equity podcast with host Rebecca Bellan, Index Ventures partner Shardul Shah discussed how periodic, human-in-the-loop security reviews can no longer keep pace with modern digital environments. Shah, who has spent nearly two decades investing in enterprise software and cybersecurity, noted that the velocity and behavior of autonomous software agents necessitate continuous defense systems built natively for AI workflows.

The rapid evolution of these threats has altered early-stage venture mechanics. Emerging startups such as Instinct and Simile have recently secured nine-figure checks, reflecting an appetite among investors to back AI-native defense platforms at development stages that previously demanded substantially more operational traction and commercial validation.

Shah's perspective follows his backing of cloud security firm Wiz across six consecutive financing rounds before its $32 billion acquisition by Google earlier this year, marking one of the tech giant's largest acquisitions to date. According to Shah, the shift underway in enterprise technology requires entirely new security frameworks rather than incremental updates to legacy software tools.
