Advanced AI Society Joins Linux Foundation to Launch Proof-of-Control Standard for Autonomous Agents
The alliance released the v1.0 working draft for public comment as federal lawmakers push for verifiable safeguards on autonomous AI systems.

The Advanced AI Society has officially joined the Linux Foundation and LF Decentralized Trust to launch an open-source verification framework designed to validate the runtime behaviors of autonomous artificial intelligence agents, as first reported by Tech Startups. The initiative comes alongside heightened bipartisan Congressional scrutiny in Washington, where federal lawmakers are advancing proposals that would require continuous third-party testing and verifiable monitoring for AI systems deployed across commercial and public networks.
As part of its entry into the open-source organization, the consortium released the initial working draft of its Proof-of-Control v1.0 standard. Hosted as an official project lab within LF Decentralized Trust, the specification was co-developed alongside more than 80 security leaders across various industries. The working draft remains open for public comment through October 30, 2026, providing an open standard meant to allow external parties to audit agent execution independent of vendor self-reporting.
The effort seeks to close what safety researchers term the "Verifiability Gap," a systemic delay occurring when autonomous software operates at speeds beyond human monitoring capability. Under the alliance’s model, verification mechanisms must remain neutral and decoupled from the developers running the software. Tricia Wang, co-founder and chief executive officer of the Advanced AI Society, stated that periodic audits are inadequate for millisecond-level AI operations, stressing that housing the specification within a neutral foundation prevents individual corporations from controlling evaluation mechanisms. Proof-of-Control co-chair Ken Huang noted that the standard requires an agent's operational boundaries to be established prior to execution, creating verifiable runtime logs throughout the software lifecycle.
Under the Linux Foundation umbrella, the Proof-of-Control framework integrates established cryptographic standards such as AnonCreds and Trust Over IP. Daniela Barbossa, general manager of decentralized technologies at the Linux Foundation and executive director of LF Decentralized Trust, said the alliance's membership connects its standard-setting work to a global community of open-source software builders. Dr. Hart Montgomery, chief technology officer of LF Decentralized Trust, highlighted that while cryptography cannot solve every agent security challenge, automated cryptographic verification allows external developers to audit system authority without depending on proprietary black-box code.
Enterprise leaders participating in the initiative emphasized the practical necessity of open verification across sensitive industries. Charles Iheagwara, global head of AI and cybersecurity at pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and a member of the project's distinguished review board, indicated that corporate intellectual property and patient safety require inspectable records rather than vendor claims. Similarly, Erynn Petersen, chief executive of healthcare platform Emme, noted that AI execution involving medical decisions and billing mandates transparent proof of authority. Patrick Duffy, founder and CEO of Solv Labs, and Anoop Nannra, co-founder and CEO of Oko Labs, both pointed out that machine-verifiable proof at the network layer allows financial institutions and insurers to accurately quantify and price algorithmic operational risk.
Regulatory and academic advisors also backed the technical framework as automated agents assume greater economic responsibilities. Former U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo, serving as a senior advisor to the society, stated that legal and market structures require audit-ready evidence before AI tools can exercise financial authority. Clay Shirkey, vice provost for AI and technology in education at New York University, observed that generic "human-in-the-loop" safeguards are insufficient when software acts at extreme speeds, making open log validation essential. Cryptographer Bruce Schneier, serving on the review board, added that establishing agent ownership and authorization limits will be critical as machine deployments become widespread.
Addressing national security and risk prevention, former Department of Homeland Security AI policy lead Noah Ringler emphasized that open verification is vital when autonomous systems operate within critical infrastructure. Jim Schwoebel, director of research at the Advanced AI Society and CEO of Quome, cautioned that unverified automated errors can escalate into systemic crises if left unchecked. Alliance co-founders Michael Casey, Bettina Warburg, and Sheila Warren emphasized that decentralized infrastructure ensures machine accountability functions as a transparent public asset rather than a proprietary service controlled by single vendors.
To detail the new framework, the Advanced AI Society and LF Decentralized Trust will host a public launch webinar titled "Who’s Watching the Machines? Launching Open Verification, the Proof-of-Control Standard for the Agentic Era" on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The event will bring together software engineers, policy specialists, and corporate security executives to discuss implementation strategies for the open standard.
