AWS Engineers Release Open-Source 'Pizza Bot' to Manage AI Agents via Email-Style Inbox
The desktop application moves away from live chat windows, letting users delegate tasks and review AI agent outputs asynchronously.
Software engineers at Amazon Web Services have released an open-source desktop tool called Pizza Bot, designed to help users interact with autonomous artificial intelligence agents through an email-style interface, as first reported by The Register.
The application was originally built as an internal tool within Amazon to manage non-developer AI tasks across background operations. Named after Amazon's famous "two-pizza team" organizational concept, the utility attempts to address usability issues present in traditional live chat interfaces when delegating multi-step autonomous tasks.
Rather than forcing users to remain in an active chat session while an AI model completes a task, Pizza Bot treats each assignment as an asynchronous thread. Incoming messages from agents are categorized into an "Unread" view for completed reports or an "Action" view when an agent requires decision-making input or specific permissions.
The development team noted that an asynchronous design reflects standard human workplace interactions, where employees delegate work and check back once results are ready. The approach eliminates the need to constantly monitor a chat interface while an agent performs tasks such as web research or local file operations.
Pizza Bot operates locally across Windows, macOS, and Linux, recording conversation histories in local SQLite database files. The application allows users to route requests to cloud-based model providers or run models locally using Ollama for environments that require complete data isolation.
In its default open-source release, Pizza Bot includes basic utilities for searching, reading, and editing local files, along with task delegation to secondary agents, browser automation tools, and a sandboxed JavaScript interpreter. Company-specific internal integrations were removed prior to public release, though the tool supports Model Context Protocol configuration files compatible with Claude Code.
The maintainers emphasized on GitHub that Pizza Bot remains an experimental open-source project rather than a supported commercial cloud service from AWS, meaning the application does not carry formal customer support or service-level agreements.
