Specialized cloud computing provider Lambda is raising up to $4 billion in a private financing round that values the startup at $14.5 billion pre-money, according to a report from TechCrunch AI citing reporting from The Wall Street Journal. Coatue Management and Blackstone are leading the equity investment, which is expected to be Lambda's final private round before a planned initial public offering in 2027.

The financing comes amid a sharp expansion in booked business for the graphics processing unit (GPU) host. An investor letter cited in the reporting revealed that Lambda's backlog climbed from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September. Much of that $35 billion surge stems from a single customer agreement signed in late August with AI research lab Anthropic.

That customer concentration highlights the structural dynamics facing specialized cloud providers known as neoclouds. While Lambda's valuation has increased substantially since its 2025 funding round, its revenue pipeline leans heavily on Anthropic's continued compute consumption. Even so, sustained scarcity of enterprise-grade AI hardware has kept private investors eager to back infrastructure operators with secured access to high-demand chips and locked-in lab contracts.

Meeting that demand requires massive upfront capital. Neoclouds typically finance data center expansions through debt, and Lambda secured an additional $1 billion in debt financing last week. The new equity round provides additional balance-sheet support and establishes a benchmark valuation before the company faces public market disclosure requirements.

Lambda had originally aimed to debut on public markets in 2026 before pushing the timeline back to 2027 due to market conditions. When it goes public, it will join other Nvidia-backed specialized cloud operators like CoreWeave and Nebius that rely on public equity to finance infrastructure buildouts. British competitor Nscale filed for an IPO last month. Lambda, Coatue, and Blackstone did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
