Apple Details Charging Speeds and Battery Architecture for $1,999 iPhone Duo

Apple has officially unveiled its inaugural book-style foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, debuting a new dual-screen form factor alongside a $1,999 starting price. Despite the substantial structural shift away from traditional rigid chassis designs, the hardware retains compatibility with Apple's proprietary magnetic charging ecosystem. The device features support for both MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging protocols, delivering power at rates up to 25W.

According to technical details first reported by Mashable Tech, the foldable handset can replenish its battery from empty to 50 percent capacity in approximately 30 minutes when paired with a compatible MagSafe or Qi2 wireless pad and a power supply rated at 35W or above. During internal evaluation, Apple utilized a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter to perform its benchmark wireless charging tests. For users seeking faster turnaround times, a direct USB-C wired connection reduces the 50 percent charging duration to roughly 20 minutes, provided the setup utilizes a cable rated for at least 60W alongside a compliant USB Power Delivery wall adapter. Real-world charging rates will vary depending on operating temperatures, system settings, power brick specifications, and active device usage.

To accommodate the folding mechanism without compromising internal capacity, Apple opted against fitting a single continuous battery across the central hinge. Instead, the company engineered a split power architecture consisting of two separate high-energy battery units positioned on opposing halves of the phone. An integrated software management layer coordinates the two packs, treating them as a unified power system. Apple rates the handset for up to 31 hours of continuous video playback when using the primary 7.6-inch internal display, and up to 44 hours of playback when operating exclusively on the 5.4-inch external screen. For users alternating evenly between both panels, battery longevity is estimated at up to 24 hours on a single charge.

Thermal management and energy distribution across the dual-battery configuration are overseen by Apple's custom A20 Pro processor. The silicon operates alongside a bespoke internal vapor chamber designed to dissipate thermal output during resource-intensive applications, including real-time artificial intelligence processing, mobile gaming, and concurrent multi-app execution.

When folded shut, the iPhone Duo assumes a footprint similar to a standard paper passport, giving users access to the 5.4-inch outer cover screen. Unfolding the device reveals a flexible 7.6-inch main display, marking the largest screen surface area ever integrated into an iPhone. The custom hinge structure can self-support the chassis at various angles, enabling hands-free orientation for FaceTime calls, video viewing, time-lapse photography, and Apple's StandBy display mode. Additionally, the device supports input from the Apple Pencil via a USB-C interface and incorporates multitasking software capabilities, such as running two applications simultaneously side by side and saving frequently used app pairs for quick retrieval.

A second option, the $129 iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand, features an integrated rear support mechanism capable of propping the device at variable viewing angles for reading, streaming media, or hands-free calls. The folio will be offered in Navy Blue and Taupe. Both protective covers incorporate internal magnet arrays that align automatically with MagSafe and Qi2 charging surfaces, eliminating the need to detach the cases prior to charging.

The iPhone Duo and its corresponding accessory lineup were announced during Apple's "Surprise and Shine" keynote event hosted at the company's Apple Park headquarters. Preorders for the new foldable handset and its dedicated cases are scheduled to open on Oct. 16, with broader retail availability and customer shipments set to begin on Oct. 23.
