Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Featuring Variable-Aperture Cameras
The flagship devices preserve the previous generation's form factor while adding updated optics, expanded camera controls, and a smaller Dynamic Island.
Apple unveiled its next-generation flagship smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, during a presentation titled "Surprise and shine" at its Apple Park headquarters, according to hands-on reporting first published by The Verge.
The new hardware maintains the primary structural design language of the previous iPhone 17 Pro family. Apple has retained the aluminum chassis construction alongside the same display sizes and core body proportions as the outgoing models.
Four color options will be available at launch: black, silver, burgundy, and a blue variant marketed as "glacier." Exterior updates include rear glass that has been color-matched to create a more unified appearance with the metallic frame.
The primary rear camera incorporates a new variable-aperture lens mechanism. Users can rely on automatic aperture adjustments or select from four distinct mechanical f-stops: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0.
To support the hardware changes, Apple incorporated advanced control parameters into the built-in iOS camera application, enabling users to adjust photographic settings natively without relying on software from third-party developers.
The Dynamic Island feature located at the top of the screen has been reduced in physical size. The updated display interface now supports up to three active Live Activities simultaneously.
Pricing for the base model iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. The higher-tier iPhone 18 Pro Max carries a starting retail price of $1,299.
Customer preorders for both smartphones are scheduled to begin on September 12th, with widespread retail availability starting September 18th.
