Waymo Plans 2027 Germany Robotaxi Launch in First European Union Expansion
The Alphabet autonomous vehicle unit will begin phased street testing in Munich ahead of a commercial public rollout late next year.
Alphabet-owned autonomous driving developer Waymo announced on Tuesday that it intends to launch driverless ride-hailing operations in Germany by 2027. The project represents the enterprise's inaugural entry into the European Union and its third market outside the United States.
Initial phased vehicle testing will commence in Munich within the next few weeks, according to details disclosed in a corporate blog post and first reported by CNBC Business. Early test runs are intended to create high-definition mapping of local roadways, train technical field staff, and adjust the company's autonomous driving software to handle the city's specific traffic and roadway environments.
Waymo targets a commercial release for the general public in Munich toward the end of next year. The German effort builds on the company's gradual push to deploy fully autonomous vehicle infrastructure in dense urban environments across multiple continents.
Company management emphasized the strategic alignment of the new location. Waymo co-Chief Executive Officer Tekedra Mawakana stated in the post that Munich is a world-class hub for mobility and engineering, noting that joining the municipal ecosystem represents a significant landmark in the company's broader international growth agenda.
Munich becomes the third global city outside North America targeted by the self-driving technology provider. Waymo is currently running driverless vehicle test programs in both London and Tokyo.
In its domestic market, Waymo has built a leading footprint within the nascent autonomous transportation industry. Corporate website documentation indicates that the business operates commercial driverless services across 11 U.S. metropolitan areas while making preparations to enter 19 additional domestic markets.
The planned European expansion follows recent domestic growth initiatives. Just last month, Waymo disclosed plans to expand its operational territory into four new American cities: Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa, Florida.
Operational metrics published by the developer highlight significant real-world testing volume. As of March, Waymo reported that its autonomous fleet had completed nearly 221 million fully autonomous driving miles.
