JPMorgan Chase Chief Executive Jamie Dimon is proposing a comprehensive transatlantic free-trade pact, calling on Washington to offer Europe broad market integration in exchange for sweeping structural and military reforms across the continent, according to a report by CNBC Business (https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/29/jamie-dimon-europe-trade.html).

Writing in a Wall Street Journal op-ed published Monday, Dimon argued that the United States should present Europe with a major inducement: if European governments implement critical reforms across security, resiliency, energy independence, and financial markets, Washington should negotiate an expansive economic and free-trade agreement.

Dimon framed existing transatlantic trade disagreements as minor relative to the scale and potential gains of a unified market. He suggested the agreement could eventually incorporate other allied democracies, including Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines, creating a combined economic bloc capable of establishing global trade standards and withstanding autocratic pressure.

The free-trade push directly diverges from the protectionist measures pursued by the Trump administration, whose rollout of import tariffs and adversarial negotiating posture has strained relations with long-standing trading partners such as the European Union and Canada.

To qualify for the proposed partnership, Dimon specified that the European Union must complete its long-delayed Capital Markets Union and Banking Union, fulfill the policy recommendations outlined in the Draghi report, and secure independence across defense, manufacturing, and energy supply chains. Dimon wrote that a continent capable of mobilizing private capital, scaling innovative enterprises, consolidating military manufacturing, and reducing strategic dependencies would provide a stronger counterweight to China's economic footprint.

The proposal follows prior remarks Dimon made to corporate and political leaders in Ireland last year, where he warned that Europe was falling behind the economic pace set by the U.S. and Asia.

Domestically, Dimon maintained that the U.S. must preserve its military and economic preeminence while addressing domestic inequality and civic values. Combining internal renewal with aggressive European economic modernization, he argued, would underpin Western geopolitical stability for the next 250 years.
