Apple Clarifies New Photographic Styles Texture and Grain Controls Require Latest iPhone Cameras
iOS 27 allows older devices to edit the new texture and grain parameters, but only on images captured by iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo hardware.
Apple has updated its press materials to clarify the hardware requirements for its new texture and film grain photo controls, confirming that the features require images captured on its latest hardware generation.
The company initially published a press release on September 11 stating that new texture and grain controls in Photographic Styles would be available in iOS 27 across a wider range of older hardware, including the iPhone 16 family, the iPhone 17 series, and the iPhone Air. The phrasing led users to anticipate full capture and editing support on those older models.
According to a report by The Verge (https://www.theverge.com/tech/998874/apple-iphone-18-pro-ios-27-camera-texture-grain-photographic-style), Apple subsequently revised its press releases to specify that the adjustments are restricted to photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on the iPhone Duo.
Testing confirmed that while older devices running iOS 27 can display and manipulate the texture and grain sliders, they can only do so when editing files originally taken on the new hardware. The controls do not appear when attempting to edit photos captured directly on older devices, such as an iPhone 16 Pro.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding how the feature operates across hardware generations.
