Tim Cook has clarified his responsibilities as Apple's executive chairman following his departure from the chief executive post in September, stating that he is focusing on global policy and avoiding operational interference with successor John Ternus.

Speaking in an interview with The Independent, as reported by The Verge (https://www.theverge.com/news/1008279/apple-tim-cook-not-meddling-john-ternus-ceo), Cook addressed his working dynamic with Ternus, Apple's former hardware engineering chief. Cook emphasized that his own day-to-day focus has transitioned toward government engagement and regulatory affairs rather than managing executive operations.

"First of all, John and I have an incredible level of trust in each other," Cook said. "The relationship must be based on trust, and the communication must be frequent and significant. But other than that, what I’m focused on right now is worldwide policy. And the interface with governments around the world matters because there are lots of things where we’re trying to advance or advocate for change. There’s a significant amount of work in that, and I’m doing that and helping John in any way he sees fit. I’m not meddling. I’m not a meddler."

Cook also noted that he advised Ternus not to replicate past leadership styles, drawing a comparison to his own succession after Steve Jobs. Cook told Ternus to focus his efforts where he could provide the most value rather than mimicking predecessors, advice that Ternus subsequently reiterated to Apple staff, according to a recent report from Bloomberg.

According to Cook, the leadership transition was planned years in advance to create a seamless handover. Ternus launched the iPhone Duo shortly after assuming the CEO post, timing that Cook noted was designed to give the incoming chief executive early momentum. While Ternus oversees executive leadership, Cook continues to represent Apple publicly, including a recent appearance at a White House state dinner.
